Start with a defensible capacity band
For a small or moderately damp space below about 800 square feet, 20–35 AHAM pints per day is a reasonable comparison band. From roughly 800–1,500 square feet, begin around 35–60 AHAM pints. Larger or persistently wet spaces often justify 60–85 AHAM pints or a purpose-built whole-home or crawl-space unit. These are planning bands, not manufacturer coverage promises. ENERGY STAR says capacity depends on both area and the conditions present without dehumidification.
Move up for moisture severity
Area establishes the baseline; severity moves the answer. Intermittent musty odor at 55–65% RH is different from continuous 75–85% RH, sweating surfaces or wet soil. Move up a capacity band when humidity remains high through wet weather, the space has a large exposed soil area, laundry or other internal moisture sources are present, or the unit must recover after doors are opened frequently. Standing water is not an invitation to buy a larger machine—it is a source-control problem.
Correct for the air boundary
Coverage numbers assume the machine is treating a finite air volume. A vented crawl space or leaky basement can continually import outdoor moisture, making the apparent load much larger than the floor area suggests. Before oversizing equipment, inspect vents, access doors, rim joists, penetrations and the ground vapor barrier. A machine sized for the building should not be expected to dehumidify the neighborhood.
Compare AHAM capacity, not the biggest number
Use capacity measured under the current DOE test procedure when comparing products. Listings may also advertise a larger saturation figure measured in hotter, wetter air. That figure can describe the same compressor under a more favorable test condition, but it does not make an apples-to-apples sizing chart. Record the rated pints per day, test basis, operating-temperature range and Integrated Energy Factor before comparing price.
Example: the same area, two different answers
Consider two 1,200-square-foot crawl spaces. Space A is encapsulated, has no liquid water and trends around 64% RH; a mid-capacity unit with permanent drainage may be a sensible starting point. Space B is vented, has exposed wet soil and reaches 82% RH after rain. Buying a larger unit first could hide the source while creating long runtimes. Space B needs drainage and boundary work before its equipment requirement can be estimated with confidence.
Questions people ask before acting
Is a 50-pint dehumidifier enough for 1,500 square feet?
Possibly, if the space is reasonably sealed and only moderately damp. Persistent high RH, open vents, wet soil or low temperatures can change the requirement.
Can a dehumidifier be too large?
Yes. Excess capacity can increase cycling and may cost more without fixing source water. Moderate oversizing can help recovery, but installation and controls still matter.
Should basement and crawl-space charts be identical?
No. Ceiling height, temperature, air leakage, soil moisture and how the space connects to the house all change the load.
