FIELD NOTE 12 / TROUBLESHOOTING

Why is humidity still high while the dehumidifier runs?

A running fan proves almost nothing. Diagnose source, boundary, airflow, temperature, drainage and capacity in that order.

Confirm the reading first

Place a second hygrometer beside the primary sensor for several hours, then move it to a remote location. Consumer sensors can disagree, and RH varies with temperature. Keep sensors away from the dry discharge, cold foundation surfaces and direct ground contact. If the machine reports 52% while a remote corner reads 68%, the problem may be distribution or sensor location rather than total capacity.

Look for an open moisture source

Check plumbing, foundation seepage, gutters, grading, sump operation, exposed soil and condensate discharge. A dehumidifier removes vapor; it does not stop liquid water. Wet soil or an incomplete vapor barrier can continuously replenish moisture. If there is standing water, sewage, an active leak or unsafe electrical exposure, stop treating the problem as appliance troubleshooting.

Inspect the air boundary

Open crawl-space vents, a loose access door, rim-joist leakage and unsealed penetrations can import humid outdoor air. Closing openings must be part of a building-appropriate plan that considers drainage, combustion safety, radon and local requirements. The diagnostic point is simple: capacity estimates become unreliable while the treated air volume is undefined.

Verify that the machine is dehumidifying

Check for condensate flow, a clean filter, unobstructed inlet and outlet, clean coils and normal compressor operation. A full bucket switch, blocked hose, failed pump or iced coil can leave the fan running without useful removal. Confirm that the room temperature is inside the product’s operating range and that the setpoint is below the independently measured RH.

Revisit capacity only after the system checks

If source control, sealing, drainage, temperature and airflow are sound—and RH still fails to trend downward—the unit may be undersized or defective. Compare current DOE/AHAM capacity, not saturation claims. Use the floor area and severity as a starting point, then account for partitions, ceiling height and seasonal load. A measured diagnosis protects you from replacing a good machine in a bad building.

Questions people ask before acting

Why does the fan run when the compressor is off?

Some controls run the fan to sample air or manage defrost. Check the operating sequence in the manual and verify condensate production over time.

Why did RH rise after I sealed the crawl space?

Materials and soil may release stored moisture, or liquid water may have been sealed inside. Inspect sources and trend conditions before judging the final load.

Will adding another dehumidifier fix it?

Only if capacity is the confirmed constraint. Two machines cannot compensate responsibly for standing water, major leakage or blocked drainage.
